SCIENCE MUSEUM
Make it in Great Britain, 24th July - 9th September 2012

The award-winning Science Museum in South Kensington has been selected by the Department for Business Innovation & Skills as the host venue for its exciting new exhibition, highlighting the best of modern British manufacturing.

Titled 'Make it in Great Britain', the exhibition will run from 24 July to 9 September 2012 in the Museum's Level 1 blank-canvas gallery. Business Secretary Vince Cable and Business Minister Mark Prisk recently launched the Make it in Great Britain campaign with the backing of Captains of industry from world leading UK companies.
Aiming to dispel the myth that Britain 'doesn't make anything anymore', Make it in Great Britain is all about changing the image of manufacturing - among investors and especially young people, too many of whom are missing out on great jobs and careers.

BT Road to 2012 Project

The National Portrait Gallery/BT Road to 2012 Project celebrates those who are collectively making the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games happen. The exhibition captures the journey towards the London 2012 Games and is creating a lasting record of the people who are contributing to this exciting event. From world-class athletes and those working behind the scenes, to people living and working in the Olympic host boroughs, the project celebrates stories of inspirational achievement.

The National Portrait Gallery is working with high-profile photographers over three years and commissioning a series of new portraits. Sitters include project enablers and world-class athletes, as well as those working and training behind the scenes.
Road to 2012 aims to encourage people locally and across the country to share their own stories of the journey towards the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Lucian Freud
9th February - 27th May 2012

The National Portrait Gallery will house the portraiture by the late Lucian Freud (1922 - 2011) early in 2012 who was one of the most important and influential artists of his generation. Paintings of people were central to his work and this major exhibition, spanning over seventy years, is the first to focus on his portraiture.

Insightful paintings of the artist's lovers, friends and family, referred to by the artist as the 'people in my life', will demonstrate the psychological drama and unrelenting observational intensity of his work.

THE WALLACE COLLECTION
The Noble Art of the Sword: Fashion and Fencing in Renaissance Europe, 17th May - 16th September, 2012

From 17 May - 16 September 2012, the Wallace Collection will stage The Noble Art of the Sword, which celebrates the artistic and cultural importance of the sword, as a symbol of power and prestige, as a flamboyant fashion statement, and as an icon of the Age of Discovery.

This major international exhibition will also explore the ancient origins of the modern sport of fencing. Fencing is one of only nine original Olympic events practised since the first Olympiad of the modern era of 1896. It is set to reveal a place in history where art and sport converged.

THE ROYAL ACADEMY
David Hockney: A Bigger Picture, 21 January - 9 April 2012

The beginning of 2012 sees the The Royal Academy of Arts present the first major exhibition of new landscape works by David Hockney RA. Featuring vivid paintings inspired by the East Yorkshire landscape, these large-scale works have been created especially for the galleries at the Royal Academy of Arts.

'David Hockney RA: A Bigger Picture' spans a 50 year period to demonstrate Hockney's long exploration and fascination with the depiction of landscape.

Hockney has spent years working on the RA collection, even famously declining an invitation to paint The Queen whilst being "very busy painting England actually, her country". The long awaited exhibition has art enthusiasts excitedly waiting at the starting blocks.
